Washington Redskins Controversy

There has been a lot of controversy over Native American Team Names lately. More specifically, it has been the Washington Redskins of the NFL. There are plenty of teams who use Native American names such as the Cleveland Indians (MLB), Chicago Blackhawks (NHL),  Atlanta Braves(MLB) and Kansas City Chiefs (NFL). I believe that those names are decent and can remain unchanged because they are actually Indian Tribes. The problem with the Washington Redskins is the term 'redskin' is known to be offensive to Native Americans. If you look at the picture above, this Native American woman calls it the "R" word. Native Americans claim that back in the day, the term 'redskin' was used as insults to their ancestors. I do not know how true that is but changing the team name would be a Win-Win for everyone.

Some may argue that the Redskins have has their mascot for plenty of years and there is no reason to change it. As a NFL fan, I somewhat agree with that. For, the Washington Redskins to be named something else would be weird and it would also be a tough name change to get used to. The problem is that the Native Americans deems the term 'redskin' was offensive. A name change would be a Win-Win for everyone because no one wants to offend anyone especially through a sports team name. I believe that its time for a name change that will benefit the ones offended by the name 'Redskins'. It will even benefit some people that are not offended yet are having headaches about the controversy.

Daniel Snyder, the Washington Redskins owner, has said plenty of times that he has no plans to changing the team name, but he needs to stop fighting and change the name. In conclusion, A name change should take place very soon to avoid even more controversy.
